Should Tarot Readers Allow The Client Shuffle The Tarot Deck?

I’ve known many practitioners that won’t allow the client or anyone else come in contact with their tarot cards. They won’t even allow the client to shuffle the deck when they read for them. But isn’t this an intricate part of a tarot reading? Many tarot readers believe that it is bad

luck to allow clients to handle their cards. If anyone other than them touches their deck this invites negative spirits or entities into their place of business or home. I think it’s important for the client’s energy to come in contact with the tarot. The only time I personally handle the cards is if I’ve determined the client is having a difficult time concentrating. Some readers don’t allow the client to shuffle simply because the deck of cards is larger than a normal deck of playing cards, in which the client may drop the cards or just accidentally bend a card or two while attempting to shuffle. Example, I went to get my cards read from a tarot reader. He didn’t allow me to touch the deck. But I noticed there were many reversed cards in the reading, and I didn’t physically reverse them. These aren’t my reversed cards, this isn’t my energy, and so how would this reading function well? When he performed the reading his intuitive interpretations were inaccurate in my opinion. So this takes us to cleaning a tarot deck and is it necessary. Well it’s up to the reader. The method I use to clean my tarot deck is I place all the suits back in numerical order. Some tarot readers sage or meditate on their decks. This may or may not be useful. I’ve applied this technique and in my professional experience placing the cards back in order works just as well. Tarot cards are used for divination. I understand readers wanting their cards in tip top shape; but a portion of understanding the client’s dilemma is receiving their energy, and in my opinion when this relates to tarot, can only be achieved when the client shuffles the cards.

METHODS I USE WHEN I READ:

  • I always place all the cards upright
  • I ask the client to concentrate on their question
  • I may or may not use a significator
  • I allow the client to shuffle
  • I allow the client to cut the deck
  • I interpret the reading with or without reversed cards
  • I like what Velet Angel said about having a deck of cards personally for yourself, and with this deck no one but you touches it. All the readings done with this deck are of course, your very own. I’d like to hear other people’s experience with tarot readers not allowing them to touch the deck, or readers who may or may not allow clients to handle their decks and why.
